ChatGPT

Connect GuruSup Brain to the ChatGPT desktop app as an MCP server, and make ChatGPT use it.

Use this page to connect GuruSup Brain to ChatGPT.

These steps are for the ChatGPT desktop app. They are not available in ChatGPT on the web, which reaches remote servers through plugins instead. The steps on the Brain MCP page do not cover a route for ChatGPT on the web.

ChatGPT cannot install a server from a pasted prompt, so you add Brain by hand.

Before you start

  • You have an account in a Brain organization.
  • You have the ChatGPT desktop app installed.
  • You have the Brain MCP URL. Open Brain MCP in the Brain sidebar, pick ChatGPT under Need help setting it up?, and click Copy URL next to Server URL. In production the URL is https://mcp.brain.gurusup.com/mcp. If the Brain MCP page shows a different URL, use that one.

Connect

Open MCP servers

In the ChatGPT desktop app, open Settings, then select MCP servers.

Add the server

Choose Add server. Name it gurusup-brain and choose Streamable HTTP as the type.

Paste the URL and restart

Paste the URL, save, and restart ChatGPT.

OpenAI's guide says the server list shows which servers need OAuth, and that you select Authenticate when one needs sign-in. A sign-in page opens in your browser. Sign in with the account you use for Brain. If you belong to more than one organization, you choose the organization at this step.

For more detail, see OpenAI's MCP guide.

Make ChatGPT check Brain

Adding the server gives ChatGPT access to Brain. To have it use Brain for company questions, click your name in the bottom-left corner, then Settings. Open Personalization, then Custom instructions. Paste this instruction into either box and save: "For anything about this company, use the GuruSup Brain tools before answering. Call init first, then ask_company_memory. Answer only from what those tools return, and if they find nothing, say so instead of guessing."

Check that it works

Check the server

Open Settings, then MCP servers. gurusup-brain should be listed and enabled, with no pending Authenticate.

Check the tools

Ask ChatGPT: "Which tools do you have from gurusup-brain?" A full list has 13, starting with init and ask_company_memory. See the Tools reference.

Ask a question

Ask something your organization's sources can answer.

What success looks like: ChatGPT asks Brain and answers from what Brain returns. See Ask questions.

More than one account

Brain has a get_profile tool that returns the account you signed in with: your email and an opaque profile ID. ChatGPT calls the tool marked as the profile tool to label connected accounts and tell them apart. If you connect Brain with two accounts, for example two organizations, ChatGPT can show which is which.

One connection is one person in one organization, chosen when you sign in. See Setup.

Shared configuration

OpenAI's guide says the ChatGPT desktop app, the Codex CLI and the Codex IDE extension share the same MCP configuration, so a server added in one can appear in the others. If you already connected Brain in Codex, check the ChatGPT server list before adding it again.

If it doesn't work

  • Check that you are in the desktop app, not ChatGPT on the web.
  • Check the server name gurusup-brain, the type Streamable HTTP and the URL from the Brain MCP page.
  • Restart ChatGPT after saving.
  • If Authenticate is still shown, select it and finish the sign-in in your browser.
  • If ChatGPT connects but does not use Brain, check that the custom instruction is saved.
  • See MCP troubleshooting.
